Today’s Booking Through Thursday question is… “Two-thirds of Brits have lied about reading books they haven’t. Have you? Why? What book?”
Well. If someone asks me straight out, “Have you read [insert book I haven’t read here]?” I will say no, of course, because lying is bad and I might get my tongue cut out. Or something like that. But! I will often lie by omission about books I haven’t read, because most of the time it’s just easier!
Example: The Lord of the Rings series. I tried to read them once (and will be trying the first one again sometime soonish, maybe…), but I got as far as some guy called Tom or something like that, and he was singing, and it was really boring, whatever. (Aside: I just checked my book, and yes, it’s Tom Bombadil, and I got rather farther in the book than I thought I did!) But, see, I went to a nerd university, and it gets old quick hearing, “You haven’t read The Lord of the Rings? Scandalous! Must be rectified immediately! What kind of savage are you!?” etc. So… I usually just throw out how much I dislike Tom Bombadil and they are satisfied that I’ve read the novel and poof! No more worries.
>What about you?
